Researchers in Israel unveiled how one of the most common painkillers – paracetamol - relieves pain, in a study conducted on rats. 

Research from Sweden has revealed how aggressive Shigella bacteria cause severe gut infections by using organoids to study the infection process. 

Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm, Sweden has corrected statements made by NGO Animalkind in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. According to Animalkind, Sweden falls short in enforcing its animal welfare laws when it comes to animals used for scientific purposes, suggesting that illegal practices are taking place across the country. 

Be Open about Animal Research Day (#BOARD25), the fifth annual of EARA’s annual 24-hour social media campaign, took place on 3 June, with contributions from the global biomedical community. 

Institutions and researchers across the world supported #BOARD25 including sharing case studies that highlighted the importance of being open and transparent to the general public about the use of animals in research.

To celebrate BOARD25, institutions and researchers around the world produced videos where they spoke about the animal research they carry out and about the need to talk openly with the public about animal research.

The fifth edition of Be Open About Animal Research Day (#BOARD25), EARA’s global, 24-hour social media campaign, that celebrates examples of openness in animal research with the public, took place during the FELASA Congress 2025, on 3 June. 

In 2025, EARA member Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International marks its 60th anniversary, celebrating a legacy of improving animal welfare in science and education.

EARA has just taken part in the 16th Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) Congress, held in Athens, Greece from 2 to 5 June 2025, making significant contributions to the scientific programme, addressing openness, transparency and public engagement in animal research.
