Covid-19 & monkey research

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

US researchers have shown the effects of Covid-19 infection in three different species of monkey.

The study, published in bioRxiv, gives critical detail on the immune responses of different species of monkey - rhesus macaques, baboons and marmosets - and identifies which would be suitable models to test new vaccines and therapies.

Researchers at the Southwest National Primate Research Center, Texas, tested the early immune response in macaques, which showed similar symptoms to some humans.

Baboons experienced a more severe infection, whereas in marmosets it was milder.

Hence, these monkeys can be used to help better model the variation of Covid-19 infection
