Dutch scientists speak up

The scientific community in the Netherlands has spoken with one voice to highlight the importance of animal research during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an article in Current Biology, Dutch researchers explained the limitations of animal-free alternatives at the present time and argued that the use of animals in research is still essential for the advancement of human and veterinary health.

With animal research in the Netherlands coming under increasing pressure, neuroscientist Lisa Genzel, of Radboud University, commented: "If current trends continue in a few years significant progress in biomedical research will be impossible."
