Mauritius hosted the Primate Management Conference Mauritius (PMCM), held from 29–31 July 2025 in Bel Ombre, bringing together global leaders in non-human primate (NHP) welfare and biomedical research.
The event was co-organised by EARA members Noveprim, LCL Cynologics, Cyno Breeders Association (CBA)and Bioculture Ltd, along with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where the conference is usually held.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Mauritius Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, who spoke of the country’s commitment to openness and progress in science. Also present were representatives from the US Embassy and key members of the biomedical industry.
The event featured a keynote from Professor Melanie Graham (University of Minnesota), who praised Mauritius’ unique contribution to global health through its well-managed and genetically distinct monkey colonies used in research on diabetes, organ transplants and infectious diseases.
Speakers from across Europe, the US and Mauritius discussed the ethical, scientific and societal dimensions of NHP care and research. Themes included advancing welfare through positive reinforcement training, developing better behavioural and clinical models, and strengthening cross-sector collaboration.
Mauritian-specific topics ranged from biodiversity and the challenges of what is considered an invasive species to strengthening the island’s veterinary and research infrastructure. The presence of local researchers and caretakers highlighted the intersection of conservation and research on the island.
The conference was a milestone for international collaboration and capacity-building in the region and reinforced the role of Mauritian institutions as global players in ethical primate research.
